Il già annunciato Treasure Island arriva finalmente nei nostri lettori cd. Si tratta del nuovo capitolo, il sesto, che la finnica Colossus, in collaborazione con la prestigiosa Musea, mette sul mercato. Gli appassionati del prog ormai conoscono bene questa serie che si è dimostrata essere portatrice di una impressionante serie di suites inedite, che gruppi di svariate nazionalità, spesso italiani, hanno realizzato per l’occasione. Un fantasioso mix di cinema, letteratura, musica e fumetto per la gioia di chi dalla musica chiede di più.
Anche in questo caso abbiamo tre band a dividersi lo spazio su un unico cd, i primi a presentarsi sono i finnici Velvet Desperados, seguono gli italiani Floating State e chiudono gli argentini Nexus. Non c’è che dire, un’ottima selezione che spazia in posti veramente diversi e lontani, con diverse tradizioni prog.

E’ sempre un piacere aprire il CD del nuovo progetto Colossus – Musea. Sarà il libretto sempre zeppo di informazioni, testi, foto, disegni, sarà la scelta musicale a tema obbligato che mette spesso a dura prova le capacità compositive dei gruppi, sarà la possibilità di sentire più gruppi da tutto il mondo suonare sullo spesso disco… sarà, sarà, comunque l’idea è sempre allettante.
Il tema di questo lavoro è “L’Isola Del Tesoro”, famosissimo libro di avventura per ragazzi (e non solo). Per esigenze narrative la storia viene divisa per i tre gruppi partecipanti ai quali è affidato il compito di esprimere la loro porzione in forma di suite, come da copione prog.

Eccoci qui a continuare a raccontarvi le cronache dal mondo dei progetti Colossus. Stavolta è il turno di Treasure Island, ovvero L'isola del tesoro, l'avventura partorita da Robert Louis Stevenson che ancora oggi affascina più di una generazione. Solite basi che ormai conosciamo a menadito, con lunghe suite che superano i venti minuti, sound ad imitare i timbri del rock sinfonico anni '70, libretto ricco di informazioni con una bella grafica… Come per i precedenti 7 samurai e Spaghetti Epic 2, anche stavolta si punta su un singolo cd, quindi sono tre i gruppi e le composizioni presenti. Nulla di nuovo all'orizzonte… Tutto già prevedibile… Tutto scontato? Che possa iniziare ad arrivare un po' di noia? Assolutamente no! Treasure Island si candida come uno dei migliori progetti Colossus mai realizzati finora. Le ottime band partecipanti sfoderano delle prove assolutamente maiuscole e arricchiscono la loro carriera di tre prelibatezze che faranno volare ulteriormente le loro già elevatisisme quotazioni. Ma andiamo nel dettaglio…

New project. New effort. Life. yes, the progressive rock is alive!!! Just one CD. An impressive opera about the classic of Robert. L Stevenson. Imprescindible. Velvet Desperados (Finland) is the opening act. A long song full of different instruments. good for me. Floating State (Italy) with a nice song. Wonderful Mellotron. The last section has spanish/latin reminiscences. Nexus (Argentina), is the best of this album. This is really sympho/prog rock. The concept, the sound. The atmosphere. Nexus again. Sincerely, I love this band. Thanks Musea and Colossus!!!

Here’s another new ‘joint venture’ project by Finnish progrock magazine Colossus and French progrock label Musea. The album delivers 3 bands from different countries, each plays one ‘epic’ composition.

Ed eccoci con un altro dei concept che la MUSEA pubblica periodicamente sotto la supervisione e la direzione artistica di Marco Bernard, direttore della prestigiosissima rivista finlandese Colossus. Dopo aver toccato la mitologia, il cinema e l’epica (che in fondo, quando si parla di capolavori,sono un po’ la stessa cosa), e’ ora il turno di un romanzo sul quale tutti i ragazzi da un centinaio d’anni a questa parte hanno sognato, la piu’ importante storia di pirati di sempre: “L’Isola del Tesoro” (in originale “Treasure Island”) di Robert Louis Stevenson, originalmente pubblicato nel 1883.

There are neither thrilling complexness nor headcrashing virtuosity.There's fine "Claasic Prog-like" folkish album from Italian band FLOATING STATE.It reminds me of JETHRO TULL's "Thick as a Brick" most,but surely it can't be compared with TULL's masterpiece.Good vocals (with fun accento),great songwriting (wonderful melodies!),but the main flaw is epics' length.Is this was SO necessary?While listening to "Pilgrimage..." at the first time,I use to make breaks every 10 minutes - TOO MUCH FILLER-LIKE SOLOING!!!FLOATING STATE aren't these genius to grab your attention and never let it go till the epic goes - there's nothing too important to focus on,so it gets boring.Such soloing would be great during the live show,but in the studio each of the epics should have been shorter at least on 1/4: "White Flower" 15:34 and "Pilgrimage to Nowhere" 30:22 (probably).Nevertheless,I'd like to listen to something else from these Italian guys - something more straightforward and not longer than 15 minutes!!!

If you like Italian Progressive Rock, medieval folk music, the pastoral and jazz-rock fusion, and many changes in tempo and mood in a track do not scare you, this 2003 album may well be of interest. A little bizarre, I suspect this to be a polarising album: you’ll either love it or detest it. Me, I love it. It repays repeated listening, that’s for sure. Where would Progressive Rock be without the Italians?

At least at the moment, I am inclined to consider "Thirteen Tolls at Noon" the best Classic Symphonic Art-Rock-related album released after the seventies. Honest. I am so impressed by it that all the previous winners in this category are now dethroned from that pedestal. Floating State is the band that has really revived the spirit of vintage Progressive, which, like a vintage vine, is getting better and better with years. Don't miss this CD on no account.

Ed era in effetti prog, tra pezzi che si rifanno alla musica folk, jazz, puntate nella psichedelia (esemplare la parte in cui il protagonista, parlando ad un rospo, si chiede cos’abbia mangiato per dover subire tutto questo) e tutto un caleidoscopico microcosmo di suggestioni musicali.

In generale, riguardo le suites, quello che credo io è che fin quando la musica è gradita all'ascoltatore e non è ripetitivo né l'agglomerato strumentale né ogni singolo strumento, allora il brano può anche durare più del solito - per quanto mi riguarda "Supper's ready" sarebbe potuta continuare senza problemi -. Ed è questo che ci fanno capire i Floating State che, in un certo senso, non si son voluti forzare nel proporre suites, ma l'hanno fatto con naturalezza

Prevedevo grandi cose, ciononostante questo sestetto è riuscito a stupirmi con un album meraviglioso, che riesce ad andare ben oltre quelle che pure erano aspettative particolarmente rosee.

Un’opera d’arte difficile da descrivere che surclassa in modo palese la tanto decantata scena transalpina. Un plauso anche per i testi, ispirati liberamente all’omonima novella di William Morris. Resta da dire che la produzione è perfetta e l’artwork.

Descrivere la musica del sestetto barese è impresa ardua: potremmo dire che i Floating State siano esperti conoscitori della sconfinata enciclopedia del prog anni ’70 e abilissimi nell’applicazione delle proprie conoscenze per veicolare emozioni allo stato puro.

Dei pugliesi Floating state si è cominciato a parlare qualche tempo fa quando vinsero il concorso lanciato dal programma radiofonico from Genesis to Revelation, Una suite per un anno. In questo senso la freschezza di “Thirteen Tolls at Noon” non è proprio una sorpresa inaspettata per gli “addetti ai lavori” ma la robusta conferma delle potenzialità del sestetto di Bari, in possesso di una ricca scala cromatica così come si può evincere solo scorrendone la strumentazione.

Also varying between an infinity of melodies and time changes, "Thirteen Tolls at Noon" offers a see-saw of emotions that suceed in caching the moment, also in the single moments of the two long suites: merit of a remarkable technical preparation and a never discounted "group game", perfect in exalting the outline of the guitars and the keyboards, and with the voice of Michele Moschini that dominates proscenio with intensity.

“Thirteen tolls at noon” is a great work. Probably in the last years we rarely saw a so complete and enthusiastic debut album: memories  go back to the first Finisterre's, to albums by Odessa, Aviolinee Utopia, DFA, Trono Dei Ricordi, Maschera Di Cera, just to name some of the best debut works.

Of Floating State we already had way to listen to the self prduced demo ("White Flower", recorded two years ago and reviewed in this site), and remained favorably hit. Now finally the moment of the official debut has arrived, a debut in great style.

I Floating State sono una grandissima band, ragazzi semplici, onesti, di nessuna pretesa e, soprattutto, degli ottimi musicisti, in particolar modo la batterista Beatrice, e cito solo lei perchè altrimenti dovrei citarli tutti visto che hanno un affiatamento davvero ammirevole.
Stasera hanno dimostrato che dell'ottima musica può anche sensibilizzare l'animo di chi magari non è tanto incline a certe sonorità...infischiandosene anche degli orari più o meno assurdi a cui erano sottoposti.

Ieri pomeriggio ho visto sette band progressive suonare su un palco. Ho visto prima, durante e dopo i concerti uno spirito di amicizia e di collaborazione fattiva mai visto in anni di concerti, prog e non prog. Ho visto le band seguire attentamente le altre con applausi sinceri per tutti. Ho visto e sentito sei suite bellissime...

CD autoprodotto della band pugliese "Floating state", "White flower" si presenta subito con una confezione apparentemente semplice, in realtà ricca di interessanti dettagli, dalla copertina in stile Liberty alla qualità della carta alla nota al disco...

Un interessante cd autoprodotto per questa band della provincia di Bari. Le tracce contenute in "White Flower" (in parte demo registrato in maniera artigianale e in parte registrato dal vivo in studio nel corso di un
programma radiofonico) mostrano un gruppo capace di varie soluzioni...

Really fascinating is this proposal of Floating State, a very qualified and clear minded sexted, with excellent live skill and to their credit this demo-cd, including two long pieces that reflect only a lille part of their songbook. The genre is obviously progressive...

The recording appears rather poor in several points, but Floating State properly played safe about this side, so we'll  leave out it too... As regards the content of White Flower I really don't know what to say. Full to the brim of influences....

In an undefined place among Canterbury, Jethro Tull-land, Camel-city e PFM-town perform  FLOATING STATE: these are the "geographical" landmarks of the sextet, grappled with their first demo-cd (including material representing just a little part of their original repertoire played live) and in search of a contract to release the long-awaited full-lenght.

The listening of this work brings me back to ten years ago... when as a teenager I approached music thanks to the guitar my parents gave to me some years before, and inexorably fell in the whirl of seventies music...

A cd realized with a rather small available equipment, and whose only fault is the sound of the guitars (mainly the distorted ones), that too much suffer from the lack of a more "true" recording. In spite of this fault, the cd catapults you directly in the typical atmospheres of certain bands that in the seventies made symphonic rock so famous...

It is unlikely you will have heard of them, as they are a relatively new band. New, however, does not mean inexperienced. Reading their short resume makes me feel rather unqualified, academically. Two are studying engineering, two architecture, one percussion and the other, saxophone...

First of all, I thought that the sound quality and production was very good, considering that it was recorded using the computer and 2 microphones. The whole thing sounds pretty professional, so they are to be congratulated on that!
Secondly, and most importantly, the music is very good indeed!.....
